The World’s Largest Floating Solar Plant Is Finally Online

June 1, 2017 by Alan Stainer

The World’s Largest Floating Solar Plant Is Finally Online

When I first saw the headline I thought, “But what are the effects going to be under the water?”

Well reading the article you learn that “_The placement was chosen in large part because the area was previously the location of coal mining operations, and as a result, the water there is now mineralised and mostly useless._”

Handily the presence of the water acts as a cooling mechanism, making the solar cells more efficient. The cells in turn help to prevent the water from evaporating.

There is more to it than that which is explained in the article, but it is really encouraging to see China making such big strides in renewable energy.

Games world if you mean the cooling effect that covering a roof (for instance) in solar cells has, that could be a side benefit for installing solar PV. However a green roof (grasses and the kind) would be better as an insulator from both hot and cold weather. The energy from solar cells could be used for multiple things, including air conditioning if required.

Nina Tryggvason I think they already do that in some places, although I am not sure about reclaiming the land for growing. There is a farm in Australia (I think) that uses energy from solar to purify sea water in the desert. There they are able to grow a lot of tomatoes.

    You made the error

The plants on a green roof can convert heat and light into new growth using chlorophyll which is “conversion of energy”. This conversion is moderating the external climate.

The soil itself just provides a slow-to-change-in-temperature “mass”, like logs in a log house. That is an insulation-devoid method of keeping a house from temperature extremes.

Insulation is a slow/low conductor of heat by being devoid of or having a low-density mass.

Insulation is used in the ceilings and rafters under green roofs because of the green roofs non-insulating properties.

Peat roofs do not insulate when wet and stay a green roof.

Peat is a pretty good insulator when dry however peat as a green-roof soil needs to stay moist to support plant life. In my experience once peat dries out it resists re-absorbing moisture. Peat can easily blow away when dry, also.

Well If I knew that lake names I could do a search. So many variables, Size of the lake, weather conditions, bad weather seasons. It could be a few feet to a few meters. Then you have the growth on the underside of the platforms. The temp of the water may increase/decrease and this will affect the local marine environment. It’s an interesting project, yet is it the best way to be creating energy. It was mentioned, about the land that it would take up, yet if they build them on 10-15′ towers, they could have a farm/Greenhouse underneath the panels and could have power for lighting 24/7/365 That makes more sense to me.

All ideas are great. It’s part of our creativity. Yet we also need to be practical, and only time will tell the true results of this project. With all the issues that China faces with Pollution, growing population, and not enough resources, for feed their hunger. I’m sure that they will be the world leaders in this field. This is only a bit of what they are doing. They also have delivery drones to carry up to 1 ton. Just amazing. They are richer than the USA and moving forward with environmental policies. Unlike Trump and the Coal/oil industry in North America. They want to open up coal for business again and build 4 pipelines across the country. When the rest of the world is going electric??

Those are the people that are not thinking. China 1 USA 0. Canada -1. China numbers will grow and USA/CANADA will FALL. It’s coming real soon.

I didn’t see anything disclosed with the first article that compared the per capita earnings of the US vs China.

The second article was a bit of a non sequitor….
