A solar flare and the whole thing shuts down and plummets to the ground. The aviation companies should be more worried about isolating their planes from such disturbances but once again, its more about the how economic and pretty it is. I know its difficult to see how precious each of us are in a world of billions but please, do try… just try.

Seriously, solar flares? Of all things that’s what you worry about? Low level radiation really isn’t that big of a deal to humans and shielded electronics. A huge long term study done on Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors shows that we are very capable of handling even large radiation doses without too much consequence.

Your mutant sons will glow in the dark, yupiiiii. Now seriously, prolonged exposure to radiation can have serious effects on your health, you know that. You give these companies a hand, they will take an arm; you also know that. Have you seen the latest video of the guy drag out of the plane? It could always be worse.

Ana, we’re constantly exposed to radiation and all life has been in this situation for billions of years. Our DNA is very capable of doing error corrections. Highly charged particles from solar winds are a concern but it’s not like flight crews are all glowing in the dark are they? They’re not getting cancer more than other people either.

Here’s another metric: do you know that the total amount of deaths caused by all nuclear accidents all over the planet, in all our history, is lower than the amount of deaths caused by the explosion of the Piper Alpha oil rig?

Ana Freitas if it is anything like the comparison between the internal combustion engine and the electric car, then there will be far less that can go mechanically wrong with an electric plane. Less moving parts means less wear and tear, which means cheaper and safer to fly.

Not to mention the reduction in carbon emissions.

Oh and solar flares? That’s a problem for existing planes as well. How do you fly if all your monitoring equipment and communications goes dead?

Monitoring system and communications fail but not the engine. It would be in trouble but there is a chance, a slight but real chance you might still land somewhere. An electrical engine would fry immediately. But I really do not know that much about plane engines, so its just an opinion.

Ana Freitas conventional jets have lots of small electric motors for hydraulic pressure, fuel pumps, flaps, gears… If this would be an issue at all it would be a big issue. Fortunately it’s fairly easy to shield against cosmic radiation. Computers are actually more susceptible to cosmic rays, even down here on Earth. It’s why they invented error correcting memory chips and why critical systems have backups, up to 3 in say an F16 jet fighter.

Modern aircraft are all basically faraday cages with wings. The electronics in aircraft are able to survive lightning strikes, the EM radiation from a solar flare would be shrugged off.

Change can be scary, but that is why things are tested before being introduced to the public. People used to think travelling around in horseless carriages was insane, now we think those that don’t use them are crazy eccentrics.

Ana Freitas Fair enough. A little doubt and uncertainty is a good thing. Electric planes are still a long way from being used for public transportation, so you won’t have to worry for awhile.

A little known fact, those massive diesel trains that haul cargo and people across the country are actually electric. They use a diesel engine to power an electric motor. Electric motors are all over the place, often not where you expect them.

Batteries require resources but do not actually use them up as they are 99% recyclable. For EV the carbon reduction even using conventional electricity sources was over 56% in the worst case scenario in a study from 2015. As the technology progresses and for example the Tesla Gigafactory becomes energy neutral that figure will only improve.

Have you ever seen the damage done to the earth in the quest for lithium to make these batteries? Combine that with what it takes to produce the energy to charge the batteries and I call it a lose, lose situation. Before doing away with petroleum products, find better ways to produce the energy so that it can be used as soon as it is produced. Get away from batteries to STORE the power and clean up the mess already made in order to obtain the lithium.

Lee Yaklin How do you propose to transport people around cities, countries, or continents? Using the energy the moment it is produced is a nice dream, but there are situations where this is impossible.

For example, petroleum vehicles. The energy they are using was stored chemically over the course of hundreds of millions of years. If it had been used at the time there would be no fossil fuels to burn for energy.

Also have you seen the damage done to the earth in the quest for fossil fuels? Some damage is hidden beneath the surface, such as when they drill or frack for the fuel, and some is highly visible such as when they strip mine for coal.

Chile and Argentine are the largest producers of Lithium, they get them from “Brine Pools” (from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium#Reserves)

So Lithium basically gets pumped up in liquid salt form, not mined, though Lithium can be found and obtained while mining for other elements.

Matt Casters The one photo you showed is not a lithium mine, true. The other photo is one of the preferred (by Albertans of which I am one) methods of removing oil from the sands, false. It is actually a fracking site in Saskatchewan. Though overall is representative of what Steam reclamation looks like above ground.

Yes the strip mining of the sands is bad, nobody argues that. But the other major source for fossil fuels is on the other side of an ocean in countries that have poor human rights records. People have a right to choose between purchasing oil from dictators, which is then shipped across an ocean (burning more fossil fuel), or purchasing it from a local democratic country.

With the price of oil being held down the far more environmental system of steam reclamation is not used as much because strip mining is cheaper. And until giving up oil cold turkey will not cause the death of billions we have to choose between evils.

Lee Yaklin Lithium mining basically looks like fields of ponds where lithium rich brine has the water evaporated out (via sunlight) and the salts are then processed. A lithium battery will store several times the energy than that which is used in it’s production, in terms of electrical energy, the solar thermal energy may change this but that energy is landing on that same land regardless.

The overall reduction in pollution by using battery “powered” vehicles, even those charged by coal, is at least 53%. For those that are not yet convinced about CO2 and the environment they should look at the cost of ownership. Initial purchase price of BEVs is often higher, but the fuel savings is at least $1200US/year. Plus there are often incentives to purchase BEVs and lower maintenance costs of BEVs.

Luis Martinez Coating the entire plane in solar panels might add 5km onto the planes range and would ensure that the plane would crash if it were ever to be struck by lightning. For gliders and other light unmanned planes solar panels on the wings can be viable, but for commercial planes they are of no use.

Luis Martinez That’s nice but of no value for planes. He would need to also increase the efficiency several thousand percent while also making them non-conductive to make them immune to lightning. Both of these things are beyond current scientific knowledge.
