You don’t need expensive software anymore

February 2, 2017 by Alan Stainer

You don’t need expensive software anymore

Open Source software is often forgotten or snubbed by professionals and that is an attitude that really needs to change.

I won’t go into details about the cost savings involved, because this article does a good job of doing that. However I will say that after using Open Source alternatives to the big expensive software suites out there (and I mean really give them a proper go, not just a five minute glance where you learn nothing), you will find them easily up to the task. In some cases you may even find they are better than their expensive counterparts.

It’s a wonder how LaTeX and QuarkXPress were both always able to deliver much better quality output than the Adobe products.

A good list of free alternatives .

Thinking of why they are not used more, may be because a professional wants to look professional and using expensive tools is a sign of that. You can’t get fired for buying IBM (even if it’s more expensive)

Panu Viljamaa that is certainly part of it, but then we are talking all about image and branding, rather than purely if it is the right tool for the job.

GIMP and Photoshop are very technical applications. I use krita in arch linux, and Affinity Photo on the Mac. The user interfaces are much more artistic, and the tools I need are always at my finger tips with the latter two.

gimp batch plugin is a very technical, non-artistic task. Krita has a much more intuitive interface, while gimp has a technical one.

It’s like wine, the price hardly ever correlates with its quality.
