Are you ready for the upgrade?
Yes, I am speaking about the dreaded Windows 10 upgrade. However unpalatable Microsoft’s methods may be, they do have some very real concerns which they are trying to address.
That unfortunately is not really a good enough answer for most people. Have Microsoft gone too far this time?

Alan Stainer nice read. You should have mentioned some alternatives.

Thanks Hugh McVea I have in previous columns and will no doubt do so again. Limited by space in the paper though (the real physical version) so have to keep things short.

Alan Stainer ah I didn’t realise it was a paper publication. Makes sense.

Oh the Windows 10 update is real fun Alan Stainer as I found out with this machine.
Download it then one of the first things it wants to do is to ‘Download Updates’. Eh? I have just downloaded a fresh copy and it it already needs updating? More fun though because it just completely hangs at this point and the only way out of the upgrade process is to hit the power switch.
A second attempt was left to run overnight thinking that it would be finished by the morning. No such luck because the extremely talented programmers at Micro$oft have put several prompts into their install process that stop it in its tracks.
Several hours of watching paint dry and it finally boots into Windows 10. Actually I was tinkering with the live boot of Ubuntu on the other machine which will replace XP when I can get moving the data sorted out.
It got the date format wrong and that took a few minutes. And it is clearly obvious to some extremely talented programmer at Micro$oft that the place to put the Restart option should be labelled ‘Power’
Worst thing was that it overwrote Chrome as my default browser with Edge. I seem to recall Micro$soft got hit with quite a big fine and told that they had to offer a browser choice in the EU. That one got a bit confusing but only took a few minutes.
I do find the new interface confusing but I will get used to it in time as I discover how to find things that I would previously use frequently.
If I had problems when I know my way around computers then imagine what the average user will face. Better upgrade process needed.
BTW I was impressed by how Ubuntu has moved on because I really did not like it a few years ago. It will definitely be replacing XP sometime in the next few weeks.

Ian Dixon Ubuntu has indeed come a long way. I may well be using it on my wife’s Windows 8.1 PC after the latest crash that has killed the disk. That PC has always been unstable and It has nothing to do with the hardware.
