Dozens of people have been poisoned by carbon monoxide after failing to turn off the ignition on keyless cars, according to the New York Times.

This is simply not possible with an electric car. Another reason to switch and ditch the old internal combustion engine!

Your headline is better than BBC’s. Clearly, it’s not the car causing this, but the inattentive driver. But I’m a bit surprised there’s not an obvious warning bell or something.

Edit: Meant to say a mandatory warning bell. But I suppose that still wouldn’t help in the cases of hybrids where the engine switches itself back on when batteries run low.

Edit 2: Unless the external car alarm then went off. You’d likely notice that and go back to the garage to shut it off.

Jeremiah Burns Yeah, I deliberately didn’t use the same heading as the BBC, because I thought it was too much like click bait and it was misleading.

You might be surprised to know that a very large percentage of the population doesn’t have the STEM education to know what CO is, much less its effects.

That would indeed surprise me. But if they knew their car was suddenly running, at least they’d go switch it off … to save fuel if nothing else.

Why is this phenomenon a surprise? People do everything today in a distracted state of awareness. They drive while texting. They leave kids and pets in hot cars in the sun and wonder why they roast. They drive off leaving their garage door open or the home unlocked. They do not see red lights, stop signs, motorcycles and pedestrians. They fall asleep at the wheel. They forget to take their medication, etc., etc. Forgetting to turn off the car is a no brainer, pun intended.

We forget Internal Combustion Engines produce toxic gas that is very lethal. Indeed, my electric car stays on all the time, indoor or outdoor and in fact doesn’t have an ignition nor start/stop button.
