Nissan Leaf e-Pedal & ProPilot

March 22, 2018 by Alan Stainer

Nissan Leaf e-Pedal & ProPilot

I am guessing this is going to sell very well, as it looks better than the original Leaf in every way. Also on top of that Nissan can sweeten the deal by installing a solar + battery storage option with charging point at your home.

With 65,000 miles on my 2012 Leaf, my next one is looking great. The problem is that my Leaf is looking like it could last several more years.

Mac Baird Yep, that is something else that people are now realising about EVs. They really do stand the test of time in comparison with their fossil fuel counterparts and the longer you can keep a car running, the cheaper it will be.

Mr. Braddock Extremely reliable, no maintenance beyond replacing the tires around 42K miles. Saves me about $1700/year compared to the wife’s Nissan Rogue. Battery capacity/range has diminished a bit over the years, but still within my commuting and local travel needs. I estimate a 100% charge is now about 65-70 miles at 45-50 mph average. The original MSRP was $34K, but I received a $7K tax credit, $3K green incentive from my employer and $1500 discount because my brother-in-law works for Nissan. I understand the MSRP is now down to about $29K for the current model. I still get 5.1 miles/KwH = 10 cents when my average speed is in the 45-50 mph range.

Mac Baird Hey, thanks for the reply. What was the range of yours from new? The latest model Leaf ad says over 200 miles I think. Did the battery degrade much over time is what I’d like to find out more about.

I’m wondering what the second car market will look like in the future, as in electric. Everything will be changing, they be more restrictions on conventionals in big cities like London and so on…

Mr. Braddock Adrian Chapmanlaw Range is speed dependent, the faster you go, the shorter your range. Maximum range is achieved around 40-45 mph. Also, hills reduce range, and battery capacity is negatively impacted by temperature extremes. Additionally, running climate control on very hot or cold days can eat up 5-10 miles of range. These worries diminish, if you live in an area with lots of charging stations. I had the same concerns with a diesel-electric submarine in my first career. On a 1/3 bell, a fully charged battery would last 3-4 days, but only 1.5 hours on a full bell.

Mac Baird yeh i can get anything from 3.3-4.1 miles/kWh depending on how I drive it, temperature etc.

I averaged 4.1 on a motorway trip to portsmouth and back a few weeks ago when the weather was a little warmer.

on my 24kWh if I err on the side of caution i know i can always get 50 miles on the motorway from 80% rapid only had it since december, hoping that comes up to 60+ miles in the summer
