Have you ever wondered if an electric car was any good at towing?

Have you ever wondered if an electric car was any good at towing?

Well wonder no more! This is a truly impressive feat by any standards.

I seem to keep seeing things like this where a seemingly ordinary vehicle pulls something extraordinary. These are just publicity stunts. VW did it years ago with a Toureg pulling a 747. Porsche did it a year or so ago with a Cayanne pulling an A380. I saw a show here in Australia a few years ago that was just blatantly promoting the VW Amarok where it pulled a road train. I’ve seen another video of an X pulling a prime mover and trailer up an incline in the snow. (That particular video also showed what I would call a Darwin award contender walking across the path of the vehicle pulling. If the tow chain slipped or snapped that X would go lunging forward potentially running over that person. You also don’t want to be between the vehicles.) I’m glad this video seems to have been made by people with common sense and safety in mind.

That said these stunts don’t actually prove much.

Warwick Williams Even so it is still a good thing that helps to dispel some of the myths around electric vehicles. I know people that don’t believe you can tow a caravan with an electric car and feel the only option is to buy diesel!

We need impressive stunts like this.

Alan Stainer I disagree with needing publicity stunts to do this. These stunts make idiots think they can do things they can’t and it is these people who get themselves into trouble and more often then not end up hurting others.

Anyone buying a vehicle should research their selections first to see if it is fit for purpose. If buying a vehicle with the intension of towing they need to look at the tare weight, gross vehicle mass and gross combination mass along with maximum towball down force. From these figures you can work out what the maximum tow capacity is and what the load capacity is while towing.

This goes with all vehicles that it’s both illegal and dangerous if the design capacity of the vehicle is exceeded. So if someone is buying an X to tow a caravan they are limited to what the X can tow allowing for loaded weight, towball down force etc. If the X fits this ticket then all good.

The problem with the X in this is there are so many different flavours with different options and they all return different capabilities, some by quite a lot. For example the wheel size changes the tow capacity dramatically. It all comes down to specifics as to what can be done with what is there. The point here is that towing in the X is complicated in comparison to towing in a LandCruiser or RAM 2500 for example. Those vehicles have easy to understand limitations and there aren’t a lot of things that can cut into those.

There are articles where they used an X to actually tow a caravan. These sorts of real world demonstrations are much more practical and realistic however a lot of motoring journalists are nauseatingly deficient when it comes to objectivity.

Anthony Hazard With a standard 4X4 if one wheel starts to spin all the power from the motor will go to that one wheel. It seems to work better the other way around.
