Endless discussions about petrol and diesel pollution

January 22, 2018 by Alan Stainer

Endless discussions about petrol and diesel pollution

BBC News the conversation has moved from petrol vs diesel.

Here are two questions that everyone should be shouting out loud and here are the answers.

Q. What cars have the greatest performance, petrol, diesel or electric?

A. Electric

Q. What cars have the lowest emissions, petrol, diesel or electric?

A. Electric

In short there is no place at all for arguing that petrol or diesel are cleaner than we thought. They are both dirty and the only sensible option is to stop talking about them and actually talk up the benefits of electric vehicles for a change. You know zero emissions, less noise pollution, much lower running costs, no oil changes (they don’t need oil), no gear boxes (they don’t need gears), easier to maintain, etc. The list of advantages is a pretty big one, so please stop dragging everyone through the fog of petrol and diesel discussions. They are last century technology.

Short and sweet, and a wonderful reality check post Alan, electric is the Way to go and there is no room for even trying to debate the merits of petrol and diesel vs electric no matter if we are Talking about the planet, the environment, air pollution and public health or whatever.

The total toll on society, the planet and invididual peoples health is Way better with electric vehicles, so that is the Way society has to go, and While the ev industry is far from perfect, It’s Way better.

    Great post.

Thanks Michael A Koontz As one of the ones that helps to pay for the BBC through the license fee, I felt it was about time they were called out for pandering to the fossil fuel industry. Even the major car manufacturers know that EVs are the way forward and are looking to ditch ICEs in the not too distant future. It’s time the media caught up to that fact and stopped polluting the subject with irrelevant discussions about a doomed technology.

100% in agreement with you Alan. It is sad to see a few fossil fuel loving car journalists ( in various nations ) still trying to Talk up the worthless dead end that is the ICEs.

There were many studies related to the negative health effects of both diesel and gasoline exhaust. This was the most recent study I found on diesel exhaust.

If people paid half as much attention to the quality of air they breathed each day as I used to in my Submarine Force career, they would have outlawed fossil fuels decades ago. It is obvious that I was safer underwater than in any urban or suburban neighborhood on the planet.

I turned air pollution into a fitness school question this winter since air pollution greatly harms the health of every human being living in that area ( be it the increase in Alzheimer’s it creates, or cancer and cardiovascular issues and shortened lifespan ). So in this case, the question was, will the health benefits of your fitness choices suffer due to air polluted cities?. ( London was used as a scientific example )

anorseview.com – Fitness School, Do you know the right answer?. Question 21, will the health benefits from my fitness life suffer in air polluted cities?. | a Norse View

Michael A Koontz that is a very good question. I recall a piece on the radio a while back where a study was conducted and the findings were that the benefits from moderate exercise outweighed the harm from pollution. That does assume the pollution levels aren’t so high you have to walk around wearing a gas mask, or that you don’t overdo it.

Absolutely, the benefit of exercise always outweighs the harm of pollution. But the benefit of keeping fit is Much smaller in areas with heavy air pollution vs keeping fit in less polluted areas. But, people that do keep fit and active still keep Much healthier than sedentary people in polluted areas.

But I liked this question and the real life study behind it because it showcase very clearly why fitness and environmental issues walk hand in hand. Fitness loving peoples best friends are the ones that care about sustainability and vice versa.
