Battery Powered Train

November 29, 2017 by Alan Stainer

Battery Powered Train

I suspect a schoolboy’s dream has finally come true here.

Planes, trains and automobiles. They’re all going battery powered.

I approve of the technology and the use of old stock as a concept and test bed.

I do not under any circumstances, want this old crap released into the wild. We need new stock in the UK, not refurbished cast offs.

Put the technology into fresh, new units and I’ll give it my blessing, but not like this.

Trains are already dc powered. The diesel engines just power generators that charge the batteries. It will be a short step to change the method of generation for the batteries to something more sustainable.

Tommy D that is true for some Diesel trains. Electric trains are running on AC, sometimes on rather uncommon frequencies and voltages:

Robert Köppl yes, true, but then you have to string all those lines or place electrified tracks. I have ridden the bullet trains in China. I am a big fan. I would like to see the proliferation of cleaning up diesel/electric to make the diesel side more sustainable. I think it is not too far off.
