Surprise: There’s A New Tesla Roadster With 620 Miles Of Range

I noticed Elon Musk tweet a photo of a sports car, but everyone was talking about the semi.

Well it looks like this is the new Roadster. I can only dream of owning one.

Alan Stainer Dependant on what people aspire to I agree. Street vehicles will NEVER have need to accelerate or travel at ludicrous rates. Travel farther on a charge, charge faster, travel safer; these are things that street vehicles can use, but faster acceleration and travel speeds have only shown themselves to cause accidents when used by the general public.

For professional competitive vehicles those advancements are acceptable. Providing them to the general public is irresponsible.

Edwin Laarz wow, Mr wet blanket. No one NEEDS a smartphone or laptop. No one NEEDS to ski. Some things exist because we want to ENJOY life, not just take the kids grocery shopping.

If your life is so mind numbingly boring that the prospect of these exciting and fun vehicles makes you wet yourself, then don’t buy one. But telling other people what they can spend their money on is the worst sort of small minded busybody-ness.

Colin Fox Smartphones do not require a license to operate because they are unlikely to kill people if used improperly. I would agree with people having the speed extras for vehicles if those extras required proper training to operate the vehicle under those conditions, but we let inexperienced drivers with no concept of how a vehicle handles under extreme acceleration and speeds operate them.

I drive a perfectly functional SUV according to the laws of the road, but an idiot could kill me because they want to drive at reckless speeds. Is protecting the lives of children not worth your interest? Do you think the only way to enjoy life is to drive fast? Take a performance driving course and race your buddies on a controlled track.

I didn’t say that money cannot be spent on these things, I just think that it requires proper training. Performance vehicles should require separate licensing than functional vehicles, much like restricted firearms require a different license than basic firearms.

Edwin Laarz How about knives, baseball bats and chainsaws. All these could kill people if not handled properly as well — are companies “irresponsible” for selling these?

As for you and your children – for all I know, you may be a bigger hazard on the road than someone who drives quickly, because you could be one of those deadly distracted drivers. I’ve seen, many times, parents turning away from the road to deal with some unruly child.

Distracted driving is a huge threat to others on the road. We outlaw drunk driving, and we outlaw driving and texting. Perhaps we should outlaw driving with children.

I agree that a 1.9s 0-60 time isn’t necessary. In fact, it can probably very rarely be used. But if someone wants to pay to have it, I think they should be able to. You should be able to do anything you want, as long as you don’t harm, or threaten harm, anyone else or their stuff. If you know how to drive, then you should be able to drive. If you buy a car that is beyond your capabilities, and you crash and hurt someone, you should pay for that. But I do not believe in prior restraint.

I have a P85+, and it used to be fast – now it’s the “slow one”. I like to do quick starts from stoplights, not crazy, but faster than regular traffic, and I don’t usually use more than 10-15% throttle. I have very rarely floored it.

I’ve driven this car for 4 years, accident free. I drive “snappy” or “briskly”, but always attentively. The last thing I would want is someone telling me I shouldn’t have this car, any more than you would want anyone telling you you can’t drive with your children in the car.

Colin Fox Knives, baseball bats, and chainsaws don’t kill as many people as cars do, and like cars they are not designed to do so. Firearms are designed to kill so they are a different category. Yes distracted driving is a big problem, and fortunately automated driving is being developed to remove this problem, but it will also stop you from being able to do quick starts and as such I must thank you for helping to support a company that is moving the world towards a driverless society.

You may not be a fan of being restrained by the rules of society, but take a good look around and you will see far too many people incapable of restraining themselves. People that insist they can safely drive faster than others, a claim that too often is disproven at the cost of other people’s health. How does a person ‘pay’ for the life of another? A prison sentence will not bring back a father, an insurance settlement can never replace a child.

I am simply asking that people be required to do what responsible people would do, actually learn about their interests. Only a moron fells a tree with a chainsaw without first clearing the area of hazards, sighting the fall zone, and planning a safe area to retreat to; this ensures that harm to oneself and others is minimized. An individual that is interested in performance driving should want to learn about how extreme acceleration can dramatically affect traction. Again I am not saying people cannot have these vehicles (and I have not once said anything to that effect so please get over yourself), I am simply stating that this is a feature that requires more knowledge than standard drivers training offers. If it gets you off to race nobody to the next red light all the more power to you, I just hope you understand that powerful vehicles can have powerful accidents.
