My first 280 character tweet
I saw my friend Blaise Tapp had tweeted about the new 280 character limit over on Twitter. Below you can see my reply.
In it I mentioned my own view about the 280 character limit and how I thought people would soon find it limiting as well. I went on to explain that I prefer the longer form available in Google+. What I couldn’t say, because I clearly ran out of space, is why I prefer the longer form.
Reason no. 1: Formatting
This is really in two parts. Firstly the extra space to type means you can use that old fashioned thing called paragraphs. It really helps make things easier to read and means you can make different points and explore different ideas in different paragraphs, so you end up with a clearly written piece, rather than a mishmash of thoughts.
The second part to formatting, is that Google+ allows you to write in bold and use italics and strikethroughs. It just gives you so much more flexibility when writing your posts.
Reason no. 2: Linking to other sites
There are a few tricks you can pull when writing a Google+ post. For instance, did you know you can write the time in a post with a link to YouTube and the time stamp acts like a shortcut to the exact point referenced in the video? I can’t show you here, because I am not linking to a YouTube video, but it does work.
Reason no. 3: Commenting
I just can’t get the hang of the way Twitter handles comments. It is so hard to follow a conversation over there. On G+ though, it is a piece of cake, as everything is in one place, the post that you are commenting on.
Reason no. 4: All the other things
I don’t want to ramble on too long, so I will just say Collections, Communities, Polls, using the full screen width and a heap of other reasons. They all make consuming content on Google+ great and the longer form post really shines.
Edit: Reason no. 5: Editing
I forgot to add the link to the tweet, which is here. https://twitter.com/AlanStainer/status/928170403058593793
If this was Twitter, I would have had to delete my post and rewrite the whole thing!
Lol why is 280 so special? It is better but still not great… Twitter was always just social texting, how long before they leave their roots completely… never liked the discussion format there either.

Exactly Mark Timberlake I don’t really understand why it is such a big deal. Except that Twitter has always made a big deal that it is different by having the 140 character limit, so it feels like they are betraying their own individuality.
There are and have always been alternatives that give you actual freedom to write and have better discussions. If the media didn’t love Twitter so much, would this have even been noticed?

This was mine: plus.google.com – G+ gives us lots of room to ponder. They all sprint on Twitter; here, we wand…

If journalists didn’t love twitter it wouldn’t have half its energy I suspect.
