Don’t fall asleep, because this is worth watching
I always wondered how Mark Rodriguez did his art and now I know. It looks damned cool.

don’t fall asleep – BTS
here is the behind the scenes post for my don’t fall asleep image i posted ealier in the week
i wanted to start doing a self portrait movie maniac series and so i decided to start with one of my favorites, Freddy Kreuger
lighting
i wanted a lot of lighting from different angles and also knew i would be using smoke so i set about to light myself accordingly
i wanted a light to come down to light the top of the hat and the razor glove so i set a paul C buff alien bee in a gridded spotlight directly overhead and pointing down
to assist with the front lighting i added another alien bee with a red gel on it low and close to the floor as i wanted some under lighting and the red added to his boiler room effect that he was commonly seen in
i then added two more alien bees behind me gelled orange and in barn doors as i didn’t want them to wash out the scene but needed them to help separate me from the background and would also supply the backlighting for the smoke that would eventually fill the scene
as a final accent, i placed a final alien bee gelled green on the floor behind me. this added a subtle color difference and also helped to shape and define my back hand when it was in the smoke as well as cast a little bit of green up my side just to add some contrasting color to the overall scene
i eventually filled the scene with smoke using my smoke machine and snapped away until i felt i had enough to work with
editing
since my practical makeup skills are not that great–though i am working on them–i knew that the burned flesh would all be created in photoshop
using traditional painting effects i built up layers of color defining the burned areas of the face and discoloring the teeth. i love working this way and watching the depth of the image come out as the layers are build up and it is a cool way to add makeup effects to your work
after some final adjustments in lightroom the piece was done
final thoughts
i will admit, i was a bit apprehensive as to how i would pull off the burned skin as that was something i had never tried before, but in retrospect it is similar to other hand drawn effects i have created in the past and as long as you approach them with the frame of mind and the understanding of how materials and textures work in the real world it makes it much easier to create
with what i felt was a success with this piece, i will continue to work on this series adding other movie monsters along the way as time goes on
as always, if you have any questions about any part of my part of my work feel free to ask, I am always happy to further explain if needed
