County council backs A27 bypass route
‘Councillor Bob Lanzer, the council’s cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “Overall, the environmental impacts of Option 5A, if appropriately mitigated, are likely to be significantly outweighed by the substantial economic benefits of this option over the longer term.’
This statement worries me a great deal. It suggests to me that the councillors are not thinking about the environmental impact seriously and are simply tacking it on as an after thought.
No economic benefit can ever outweigh environmental impacts. Look at the mess we have got in with the state of the air quality and the effects of global warming as two examples of ‘economic benefits’.

I know they have studied the amount of traffic and the destinations people are travelling to and from, but I don’t think anyone has bothered to try and understand why people are travelling. I think if we knew that, there would at least be a chance to try and reduce the traffic flow. Maybe not in total, but certainly at peak times. It’s those peak times that cause most of the problems and I don’t really think a bypass is going to resolve that. I mean, the M25 is basically one massive bypass and people don’t generally use it unless they have to, because it is so slow!

Yep, that’s pretty much what I said when I filled in the consultation form online Joe Merchant and I don’t believe the economic benefits are what they claim either. It’s only going to shave off a few minutes journey time at best and cost a whole lot of money in the process.

Using Storrington as an example (because I live nearby, and drive through it and to it daily and frequently). None of the Arundel Bypass routes will significantly benefit Storrington, even though the Planners and Local Government claim it will, it won’t.
We know that the A283 is a well used route to Pulborough, Fittleworth Petworth Midhurst and all points West, and East to the A24 for North South and West to Steyning, Shoreham , A27 Hove and Brighton and any point to Eastbourne.
The B2139 fork to Chichester, Bognor and Arundel will still remain an attractive rout to traffic from the East because it cuts out the Long Furlong (Death Valley) and the insanity inducing A27 through Durrington, that a very small percentage of the Traffic, whose Sat Nav’s are programmed to torture their innocent users already send them.
I suspect that the motivation behind the sudden political momentum to find a solution for the “Crossbush Soul Crusher” has less to do with fixing the A27 and more to do with Fracking The Crap Out of West Sussex than any altruistic desire to bring succour to the many Travellers passing through, paying their Road Taxes and VAT on Fuel.
Who the Secretary of State for Transport is, has a lot to do with the decision, which usually follows the formula:
“IF £265 Million + (A) is > THAN £130 Million -/+ (B) THAN a #Donation = To X will be Cubed.
It is worth looking at the Home addresses of the County Councillors who voted in favour of Option 5a, proximity to the Options and the impact on equities would have been hard to resist.
