How interstitials can ruin a page
Interstitials are those annoying popups and adverts that get in the way of the content you want to see.
I noticed this article by Neil Patel, who is really knowledgeable and well known in the SEO industry. Unfortunately it is so chock full of interstitials it makes it hard to read. I left the page after a few seconds without bothering to read it.

All those annoying interstitials are absolutely horrid. No matter why they show up.
Is anyone ever singing up for a newsletter through those intrusive things.
Worst of the bunch is the annoying thing from hell that pop up just a few seconds after you stop scrolling, showing you the video you just scrolled past in a small Window on the side, or asking you to read another article.
I mean, seriously.,,, talk about shooting yourself in the foot as far as getting that reader to become a happy recurring reader/customer.

Michael A Koontz it’s funny when you think about it. Neil has a ton of followers on Facebook and Twitter and you would think that would add credibility to his voice. As soon as he shares anything from one of his own websites though, his credibility is trashed.

absolutely true Alan. And I sadly see it on a whole bunch of respectable websites and I wonder the same thing every time, is there no thought at all behind the “behaviour” of these websites or is it all about revenue.
I mean, no one that work at those places can enjoy seeing the same kind of thing on other services.
For instance, the annoying video pop up from hell is being used big time on a MMA website I frequently read, mmajunkie.com – MMAjunkie | UFC and MMA news, rumors, live blogs and videos and ever since they started using that annoying video pop up that shows up as soon as you scroll past the embedded video my enjoyment of that service has dropped in drastic amounts, and so has my return visits.

Zachari Saltmer having the loudest voice in the room doesn’t make someone a leader and I certainly don’t think he should leading by example.

Alan Stainer this is also very true. He’s also worked with some very large companies though. Not arguing, just having a piece. Still a leader none the less..
But I can agree with annoyances of “too many”, the writer should think of the reader. Maybe trigger the time a popup happens for a little longer on-page..

Zachari Saltmer Yep. It all comes down to respect and how you want to treat your customers. Over using pop ups (or anything else that might be considered annoying) may be good for short term gains, but it won’t win you any fans. Providing a good customer experience is the key to long term gains and will win you and your brand long term customers. Building on that mutual respect your customers may even become advocates for your brand and the last time I looked word of mouth was still one of the best ways to raise brand awareness.
