EasyJet says it could be flying electric planes within a decade

I know electric planes are in the pipeline, but for a major UK based airline to openly state they are expecting to be flying electric planes within the next 10 years is something to talk about.

The future is looking cleaner and quieter every day.

And then a solar flares shots out a CME and they all die, no thanks. We haven’t even solved the power outages caused by them on the ground.

Ana Freitas by your reasoning that would apply to all aircraft in use today. They all have vital electronics which keep them in the air and they are all shielded from solar flares and the like.

What will happen though if something goes wrong and the plane cuts off? At least you know you can trust the gas planes but what if a battery dies mid air and the plane crashes? This is something to consider

I’m amazed that people even think that none of these issues are being considered in the development of the technology. Funnily enough that sounds like the same sort of skeptical arguments that people were making about electric cars.

[Brace yourselves, the range anxiety worriers are coming!!]

Alan Stainer I am somewhat concern they will try to automate this completely. I really don’t appose this with cars, just have a moderate normal apprehension; when I think on the same for planes, I think it would put me off flying until I see how it goes. I have never been afraid of flying but the concept is making me fell a bit uneasy. That’s just it, from my part. But great post, it’s always good to be informed.

Jean-Loup Rebours-Smith it does amaze me. For starters I don’t get how some people are perfectly happy flying around in something that carries tonnes of highly explosive fuel. This was the view I had of the Shoreham Airshow crash in 2015. I will never forget the smoke, the flames and the smell. telegraph.co.uk – Shoreham air crash report: Organisers unaware of pilot’s display plans

Ana Freitas that’s understandable. Obviously it is early days with respect to electric aircraft, but I would imagine (and hope) that they will follow their land based cousins and be more reliable than the fossil fuel burning alternatives.

Ana Freitas You do know that most commercial flights run on autopilot right? Typically take-off and landing are done by the pilot but except in unusual circumstances where a course needs to be changed the plane just drives itself once it has reached cruising speed.
