Electric bus travels over 1,100 miles on a single charge

Wow, this is a fantastic development in the commercial EV market. Not only is the range of this bus huge, but it looks like EVs are becoming cheaper than their diesel rivals rather quickly.

Proterra’s electric bus drives 1800km (1100 miles) on a single charge.

Electric buses are now cheaper than diesel buses, and is expected to dominate the market within 10 years.

Emil Mihaylov If that is such a great option, why are they not doing it already? Isn’t the point about all of this that we are burning fossil fuels and need to come up with better alternatives? There is a much higher cost to us as a human race than simply a number tacked onto a dollar sign.

Charles Batchelor well that is good in some respects, although natural gas does still have wider environmental implications.

Johnny Long I wonder about the cost as well. The article alludes to the fact that the technology is getting cheaper and electric buses may actually be more economically viable. Certainly that would be true in the long run. Bus companies could easily generate their own electricity through solar PV to reduce the load on the grid.

Alan Stainer Emil Mihaylov Methanol is a carbon neutral fuel, exactly like solar. Many regions do not consider it because they do not have the resources to create the fuel.

Charles Batchelor Natural gas is better than gasoline or diesel, but it is not carbon neutral and as such is still a poor choice.

Joseph Fran Amith R The cost of mounting panels is prohibitive considering the minimal gain. I would guess a gain of 20 kilometers on a sunny day. Better than nothing but it would be better to spend those dollars on battery capacity.

Bob Lew If you are making a comparison between petrol, diesel, electric and anything else, it doesn’t matter if it is fully loaded or not, just as long as all of the vehicles have the same load applied for testing purposes. I would assume that this test was with an empty bus.
