Backup and Sync for Google Photos and Google Drive is here… but I don’t care
Why? It’s simple, there is no Linux client, therefore I will not be able to use it. I think Google have really missed a trick here.

Randy Resnick there are third party solutions, but there really shouldn’t have to be. Also why pay for something that Windows and Mac users get at no extra charge?

Randy Resnick oh don’t worry. No anger here.
What I would like to say to counter your arguments is this, why would Google go to the efforts of creating a Chrome client for Linux and not a Google Drive client? With G Suite and paid upgrades there is a direct relationship between using Google Drive and Google earning money, there is none of that with Chrome. So really the arguments for not creating a Google Drive client for Linux make no sense at all. Additionally there was a client for Linux in development a long time ago, but I believe the work on it simply stopped. Infuriatingly there has never been an official anything from Google about it.

And I don’t care either, at least not until Google offers FREE unlimited space like many of their competitors do. I’m unwilling to have my entire computer backed up in Drive if I have to pay a couple hundred dollars a year to do so. I already pay for extra space as it is. It’s ridiculous.

Shane Lear I think free unlimited photo storage for anything up to and including 16 MP (via Google Photos) is a pretty good deal. Also Google do not count Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Forms towards the storage limit. So that’s unlimited too.
If you mean other file types (PDFs, images over 16 MP, etc) then I don’t know any other storage system that would give you free unlimited storage. It’s just not viable long term as there are running costs to consider at a minimum.

AOL and Yahoo both offer free unlimited email storage. I’ve used Gmail since it’s inception and it takes up most of my allotted Google space, so I pay an additional $100 a year to free up space for other Google services like Drive and Photos (original size pics) and Music. If Gmail did the same, that wouldn’t be necessary.
