I really can’t see anything positive about Hinkley Point C now or in the future. It needs to be stopped before it costs the UK for so many years to come.
It is quite unbelievable that UK is investing in such an expensive energy project such as Hinkley while scaling back solar and wind investment – especially when you consider how far behind its own sustainability goals UK already is compared to most other European nations.
I wonder how much could be done with that amount of money invested in renewables. With renewables we would see a return on the investment in a much shorter time period as well, as it would not take anywhere near as long to get solar and wind farms up and running, plus add in all of that battery storage we keep hearing about.
Alan Stainer Hi Don’t Known But when you say Renewable you mean Nuk’S that wold be About 70 years Monetarily the rest as they say to expensive to calculate
Nunzio Altomonte nuclear is not a renewable source of energy. It is technically cleaner than fossil fuels, assuming you don’t have a meltdown or don’t take into account storage of radioactive waste materials, but it is finite. Wind, solar, tidal, etc. will be here for a long time to come (billions of years).
Michael A Koontz Solar and wind are not a constant source of energy. They can not replace fossil fueled or nuclear power plants. Nuclear plants should not be built until the technology exists to render their radioactive waste harmless. Investment should be made to reduce emissions from fossil fueled power plants, since they are and will continue to be the only reliable, 24-hour source of electric power. Alternately, governments could ban most of the consumer electronics that are not needed for daily life.
First of all Donald, there are plenty of countries already proving you wrong about that. You are correct that most sustainable energy resources are not constant, everybody knows that. But that is not an unfixable issue.
Further, you seem to falter under your own logic, unlike renewables which can and one day will scale until fossil is 100% replaced, you seem to miss the point where fossils are not a renewable and sustainable energy resource, so how would they ever be able to continue power every nation out there 24/7, that is simply impossible, because all fossil will run out one day making your pipe dream an impossible equation ( not even factoring in climate and health issues ).
Of course, one day nuclear will also be waste free ( most likely ), and at point in time perhaps be a financially sound option too.
But either way our future energy production looks like, fossil is dead and will 100% be replaced all over the world.
I see the troll is still there, careful Michael A Koontz this guy doesn’t like people who disagree with him even though he’s like a walking fallacypedia :p
Michael A Koontz your assumptions about sustainable energy sources are not supported by scientific facts and current technology. Your other assumption that all fossil fuel will be depleted one day is also not supported by fact. Guess you never heard of all the new oil that can be produced by fracking, a technology that was not available 15 years ago. Spare me your let’s save the planet for future people who are not even born. Our moral responsibility is to the living. Guess you want the hundreds of millions of people worldwide living in poverty, without access to electricity or clean water to just suck it up, while you enjoy your IPad, mobile, TV, etc. Read last part of my post again, it was intended for people like you who talk a good game but will not conserve energy. Cheers. Troll just ate you, your lunch and bag it came in. Do not triffle with adults.
Okay, I have blocked Donald. I encourage people to discuss things sensibly and especially when they can back things up with scientifically derived evidence.
However, when they spread misinformation funded by and published by the fossil fuel industry then I have to put a stop to it.
In other words, I hate it when people talk bollocks.
Just to add a ‘minor’ correction to the headline: Hinkley C was originally due to be on line by Christmas 2017. It’s not a year behind schedule; it’s going to be a decade behind schedule.
When wondering WHY such projects are being built, follow the MONEY! Just as in the big pharma/medical industry game, following the money trail always reveals the real answers. So…who stands to make the most money from Hinkley somewhere down the road? (Look deep inside hidden pockets….)
