France Declares All New Rooftops Must Be Topped With Plants Or Solar Panels

Excuse the pun, but this is good for the environment on so many levels.

Now why aren’t more governments doing this?

It certainly is. I noticed this a few months ago, but its well worth talking more about :). And like you I wish more European countries made this a mandatory thing for new buildings.

This is very common in Germany. Where there is a flat roof, there are plants.

I applaud France for taking such a great step. I hear that chemical pesticides are banned in the central Paris area and it is not unusual to spot an apiary or two on the roof.

The law to impose solar panels on rooftops of newly built industrial buildings is a few years old now but I didn’t know this included green rooftops too (and I can see the article dates back to 2015…)

It’s a good start. France has had to deal with horrible attacks. They, unfortunately have a good reason for languishing on the issue of climate change. There are few reasons to do nothing/very little. The predictions are being realized at an alarming speed. More has to be done, communities are living underwater now, species are dying. Even after a storm, environmental practices must be enforced. People need to be jolted into action. Fear is no longer the way to proceed. I could go on and on, but will spare you any more rant. Thank you Alan, later, Nola.

There is a lot of things you are not allowed to do in democracies. And last I checked France is very much a democracy. So why should you be allowed to build a brand new house without either opting for a solar roof or a green roof?. It does not hurt you to do so, but it greatly helps lower the negative impact of your newly built house over time.

However the new Minister for the environment is a long-time ecologist and green activist, assuming he continues past the general election in June we should start seeing a lot of progress in enforcing solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change

Because not every Jim and Jack everywhere especially the third world countries has basic information about the deadly effects of climate change. Even when they see such effects during the day they live believing it is just a passing phase fit for a dream. What a mess we are in unless seriously there comes a time when the UN for instance will campaign vigorously as they do on Human Rights and what I may term as universal ”social and mental immunization”, need for universal attainment of primary, secondary and indeed tertiary education. Democracy! Yes. It is good when all think, live and act as one. But for real change and compliance to take place, dictatorship is the vehicle as long as ones at the helm were once democratised by dictatorship.

Germany – We do this already because we’re socially and environmentally responsible.

UK – We don’t have flat roofs – it rains too much…

What about solar panels? It’s never sunny either…

a very solid overview. And if the reason for doing a green roof is increased sustainability I´d avoid going with “container plants” for the roof due to the need for more extensive watering, and excessive water usage is something we all need to cut down on.

Not to mention peace of mind, no fun having to climb your roof weekly just to water it. Unless, of course, you rock a house that happens to have its very own roof garden that you just love spending time in on a daily basis.

But all the other listed options are great and low maintenance, both for insulation and all other sustainable reasons.
