Ransomware attack hits 99 countries with UK hospitals among targets

Well there we are. It wasn’t specifically targeted at the NHS, although it was certainly a high profile organisation that had the misfortune to be affected first and get all of the media attention.

Now can we draw from this the conclusion that it is a bad idea to put all your eggs in one (Windows) basket? If Microsoft weren’t so dominant in the desktop environment this sort of attack would not have had such a massive impact.

Well said, I was thinking of suggesting to our ICT dept that we have a Linux desktop backup which we could quickly put in place, certainly I think I may put a bootable CD or something together for Pathology, but my job is the easy one, as it’s mostly just Telnet sessions. Our PAS (Patient Admin System) is absolutely awful … It’s called Lorenzo, it runs in a browser (sounds good ?? err NO!!!) .. IE only, requires additional components to be installed on the desktop to work !!

Like, who on earth designed this monster ? Yeh, lets use a browser, but lets lock it down to IE only with desktop installs .. CRAZY !

Good point ACPlus regards to backups. A lot of IT systems backup by copying their critical data to another Windows based machine !! My system gets this daily, but monthly we take a tape backup. Still a month of lost patient test results .. YOUCH .. Even that probably needs reviewing.

I remember the corporation I used to work for had an ongoing project to replace old NT4 desktops.

It was still ongoing when I left in December 2010.

If I remember correctly the excuses were that to replace the software with something new was extremely complex and time consuming.

The moral of the story is that IT systems are often underfunded and the NHS is just one example.
