Microsoft Targets Chrome Users With Windows 10 Pop-up Ad

January 23, 2017 by Alan Stainer

Microsoft Targets Chrome Users With Windows 10 Pop-up Ad

I needed to use Windows 10 yesterday. Normally I use Ubuntu, but on this occasion I fired up the HDD with Windows 10 installed.

I let it run updates and did various other housekeeping things that I had been meaning to do for a long time, but had been putting off.

Well, all I can say is that it was one of the most infuriating experiences I have had for a long time. Microsoft just seem to want to nag, nag, nag you into doing things their way.

Anyway, this article came along at just the right time and I thought I would share it.

http://www.pcmag.com/news/351171/microsoft-targets-chrome-users-with-windows-10-pop-up-ad

Back on Ubuntu today and it is much less stressful.

until we can get these mobs of protesters to start showing up at the Gates mansion, it will only get worse. they’re testing the waters to see just how far they can push it. too bad the majority of windows users are probably ingnorant enough to accept whatever

Chuck Barnett we need a mainstream alternative to Windows.

Apple products are too elitist and Linux (still) isn’t visible enough to the general public. Chromebooks have done well, but the lack of ability to install traditional programs puts a lot of people off.

Until we get more alternatives actually available to buy in shops, I don’t think we are going to see Microsoft face any real competition in the desktop and laptop market.

Alan Stainer I was reading around on the internet the other day about microsoft’s legal issues during the 90’s. Amazing how none of that has had the least bit of effect on their (or any other of the current software mega corps) business strategies even while some facing investigations. It’s crazy but can you blame them? The complacency of the majority of their users is what’s really at fault

whereisup whereisdown Windows 7 can be susceptible to vulnerabilities and supports are no longer coming from Microsoft. It is in your best interest to use Windows 10 for security purposes. However, the choice is yours to make.

Chuck Barnett Seriously, Windows 10 spying and other related issues(which other operating system makers indulge in without questioning) are over-exaggerated though.

My understanding is that people who think it is not good enough for them can use other operating systems that suit their jobs.

Patrick Johnson I did disable various notifications and things yesterday.

It’s a pain that you have to do it though, because I can understand being notified of things that might actually be important, like an error message or an alert telling you that your anti virus has been disabled, but trying to get you to install something you don’t want or need is entirely different.

Chuck Barnett Internet is part of an operating system. Without it(OS) internet is more or less useless.

Personal computer is the physical representation of a system which covers all the features and components for interaction between hardware and software – mainly the desktops and laptops.

PC that is not connected usually doesn’t remind you with such notification. Even it if does, it is not linked to the source thereby not functioning.

so the 40 or 50 years that computers have been in use prior to the development of the internet was a hoax? and that the capabilities of computing today is completely dependent on a connection to the web? Every single piece of software on my computer must maintain a constant connection with some server somewhere in order to be useful? is this what you’re saying? Patrick Johnson

so the 40 or 50 years that computers have been in use prior to the development of the internet was a hoax? and that the capabilities of computing today is completely dependent on a connection to the web? Every single piece of software on my computer must maintain a constant connection with some server somewhere in order to be useful? is this what you’re saying? Patrick Johnson

So should I go ahead and disable all my firewalls too? The ones that block the internet from at least 60% of the applications on any one of my devices? Are you telling me that I’m making this software useless? I think I’m starting to understand now.

Chuck Barnett Why do you think it is not? Computer is made up of hardware and software. The software which is the bone of contention here comprises of the operating system – made up of logical and mathematical data( the internet becomes a part of it when you are connected).

Please, point to the part you disagree with me on and with quotation.

    Thank you.

Chuck Barnett Well, there is nothing wrong with your statement. We cannot all agree on something but it doesn’t deter us from not airing our views as much as we would like to. Let us agree to disagree.

If you can’t handle Windows and figure out how to turn off or disable unwanted notifications, in this case I am assuming it was the Edge prompts, how in the world are you using Unbuntu without mucking it up? I hear people complain about Win 10, and I don’t get it. On the 3 machines I have, which all have clean installs, I have never been annoyed by pop ups or prompts, not counting the prompts for 3rd party software updates. You are able to disable almost every annoying thing in Win 10. The only thing that still annoys me is that it doesn’t give you warning anymore, as in past versions, when Win 10 is updating. Thankfully updates happen mostly on Tuesdays, so you know to look for them.
