Renault Zoe ZE 40

January 19, 2017 by Alan Stainer

Renault Zoe ZE 40

The new Zoe has double the range of the previous version and a single charging socket that can be used on pretty much any charging point.

What Renault-Nissan is doing in terms of the technology is really quite impressive. As Robert Llewellyn points out, it has only been three years and they have already doubled the battery capacity, without increasing its physical size.

    Well…

    Nothing special thought.

It will be more useful when it can ride over ~600 km

As for now it is interesting for test purposes only.

For some folks it will be always 3 years from now. In the mean time, the average trip distance in the EU doesn’t go over 35km (thirty five!!)

Matt Casters Yep and anything more than that is rare for most drivers. Holidays, days out, etc. I don’t know about everyone else, but if I am going on a long journey, stopping for half an hour to recharge (with a coffee) is not going to make much difference overall.

I have a Nissan leaf 24kw ( with a 70 mile range ) and my daily return commute is 50 miles or 80 km.

I find this is fine and always have enough power at the end of the day even when it’s cold and I use the heater.

The only sin that I make is off the lights when I have a sports car beside me and I leave it behind. Think about the switch to electric it’s great economic and environmentally friendly fun.

P’s my running costs for the car are only twenty five per cent of my old turbo diesel!

If we would by cars like shoes: one for daily use, another for going to festival or just some kind a celebration-then YES. ~100 km range is ok for a daily use car. But car cost a little bit more then a shoe. And if you gonna spend 30k-40k euros on a car. YOU probably will use it not only for your daily rides to your work, and take a ride your child to school. YOU probably will want to go out from the city. And thees miserable 100-200 km’s that you can afford with your e-car will start being real pain in your ass.

As i said before: ~600 km is the key for many users to switch on e-cars. It still be of course no match in terms of range of your diesel friend (f.e. my volvo with one full fuel tank is beating ~1200 km range with no problem), but this is a point where being “green” and little cost per km is starting make sense. And the reason is simple – THERE WILL BE NO TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION GOING TO BE MASS PRODUCED (AND USED BY MASES) IF IT IS EXPENSIVE OR IT IS MAKING YOU REFUSE COMFORTABILITY.

As you may already know todays situation: if e car is comfortable (f.e. tesla) it is expensive. If it is affordable  it is not comfort.

Svajūnas Klemantavičius you are stating the obvious that more range is better. My point is that lack of high range doesn’t mean EVs are not usable. Furthermore, the main issue of high price of EV is a temporary problem as prices of both electricity (through solar) and batteries are on a technological price curve going down very fast, over 20% per year now.

Folks are not used to this because the car market has been stagnant for soooo long.

Finally, range problems are also caused by a total lack of charging capacity in cities, on parkings, on highways,… It’s easier for politicians to say they’re going to forbid ICE cars after 2030, it’s apparently harder to actually do something towards such a goal.
