Solar Road & Lithium Anxiety

January 12, 2017 by Alan Stainer

Solar Road & Lithium Anxiety

Okay, prepare your eyes for the dance section. Just saying.

Robert Llewellyn covers the first solar road to be installed in France, fears over the supply of lithium and some other bits and bobs.

I think you’ll enjoy watching it.

Love the dance moves dislike the misinformation about the oilsands. Yes the old stripmine extraction is bad, but the stripmine is a fraction of the development of the oilsands. You never see pictures of the steam extraction process because it is just a small plant surrounded by acres of untouched forest. In fact the oil available via stripmining is nothing compared to what is available to steam extraction. And the other option is supporting middle eastern oil tycoons with WONDERFUL human rights records.

I want the green tech in place as well, but an instantaneous reliance on renewables would kill billions. Until the infrastructure is in place we are stuck with oil and gas, and I would rather use oil from a local supplier that doesn’t line people up to be shot, than one on the other side of the planet that does, until the transition to renewables is complete.

Edwin Laarz As much as we like to think there is a ‘Green’ agenda, most of the decisions taken on the energy front are taken because of economic reasons. That’s pretty much the way it ought to be. The problematic part of tar, oilsands and many other related oil sources is that they are simply becoming too expensive compared to cheap imported oil and also because the price trend of solar PV panels is taking a nose-dive and has been for quite a while. Making large long term investments in oil, gas and nuclear infrastructure will become more and more problematic because of this simple fact.

Matt Casters I agree. It just drives me nuts when people make a lump some statement about the oilsands without stopping to think about what is reality.

I do disagree about decisions based on economy though. If decisions were based instead on resources the world would see a massive shift towards efficiency rather than profit; after all, why waste resources when doing so eats into your bottom line. Basing decisions on currency, an imaginary representation of value, means that a person can waste resources because their value is subject to market whims.

Edwin Laarz we need a collective shift in society towards that way of thinking. Unfortunately the people at the top of the pile are unlikely to change any time soon.
