Wind generated more electricity than coal in 2016

January 10, 2017 by Alan Stainer

Wind generated more electricity than coal in 2016

Despite government cuts to renewables in the UK, wind outstripped coal over the entire year of 2016. Solar did well too.

Now, it’s not simply a case that more wind powered electricity is being generated, there has also been a steep decline in coal powered generation.

The article goes into a lot more detail and I do suggest you read it if you are interested, as it is a little more complex than I have described.

Still, the future is definitely starting to look greener!

Peter Barrett thankfully things like that are rare and I would hope they can learn from the experience and prevent those system errors from happening again.

Alan Stainer unfortunately the south east australian power grid is descending into anarchy so i dont think we can expect any improvement. Last year Tasmania lost the Bass Strait link just as drought exhausted their hydroelectric water.

So you see two “rare” events in one year have given renewable energy a bad name.

Peter Barrett that is unlucky. It also highlights why we need a decentralised energy network and energy storage.

Three of those horrendous landscape blights have gone up close to us. Sort of getting used to them though and quite reasurring to see them rotating, even when it feels like there’s no wind.

I’ve joked about them having motors powered by electricity generated by coal, rather than generators, just to make us feel all “warm and green”!

All joking aside, it does make you feel all “warm and green”, knowing that they’re doing their work

    ….at least I think they are ;-)

Sadly, we can’t really trust what government or business says. I realized that I now verify everything before accepting it, which I didn’t used to when I got my information from the Encyclopedia and books, and news from one of the 3 networks- or PBS. As for the windmills it’s about perspective. I try and picture something positive and clean, but imagining the barren, formerly lush landscape of the Canadian fracking fields or tar covered birds, or clear cut mountaintops works, too.
