Flexible solar cells are here

January 6, 2017 by Alan Stainer

Flexible solar cells are here

Sunflare have unveiled their new flexible solar cells at CES 2017. They are lighter and more efficient than traditional solar cells and don’t require an aluminium frame. Which basically means they can be stuck anywhere and can cover entire roofs (no load bearing concerns) and be stuck to walls.

They aren’t expensive either and have a lower carbon footprint in the manufacturing process than regular old solar cells, plus they don’t use any toxic chemicals.

This is what I have been waiting for to glue to my metal roof. I do not like the idea of breaking the roof’s integrity (and warranty) by drilling holes through it. Now, I need to locate a vendor and/or installer. My EV is getting closer to running on 100% solar power.

Its as great a step forward as Teslas solar roof product and complement each other perfectly due to catering to different use cases.

But I am not sure we can call it particularly affordable? the total cost is virtually the same price as current ‘normal’ solar panels. Still, this lowers the negative impact of manufacturing in a substantial way, and should generate an increase in the amount of solar being installed due to the ease of installation. So I am happy to see this in the wild.

“The panels cost about $1.07 per watt generated, with total costs at $1.50 per watt. That compares to 54 cents per watt for standard solar panels, with a total cost of $1.51 per watt.”

Oh I expect the same :). Solar have improved cost of manufacturing and purchase and W by a huge margin last couple of decades, and thankfully I do not see that development slowing down at all in the next 15 – 25 years.

Cant wait for solar powered transparent walls/windows to get price friendly and efficient :)

We wont really know how big of a difference there will be in degradation during real life usage, until 40 years or so =).

But as was pointed out, normal solar panels have surpassed the expected lifespan and energy efficiency that people expected from it 30+ years ago. And I dont really see things going backwards seeing how, for instance Teslas solar roof is both thinner, lighter and more durable. So while this absolutely should be less durable due to the bendable properties, it might not end up being that much of a difference, but its just guesswork at this point.

With that said, right now I´d go with a tesla solar roof over a bendable solar roof that is for sure :).

I am reminded of the same sorts of discussions over car batteries and storage capacity dropping off over time. While it is true that capacity does degrade, it has been found that the rest of the car tends to fall apart before the battery becomes unusable.

Exactly Alan, and solar roof´s are obviously in the same ball bark, sure, sure it will lose 20 or so % in efficiency after 30 to 40 years, but at that point of “age” the question is more if the roof beneath it isnt in need of a fix it up, so obviously the solar panels will outlive the foundation its resting on, in the sense that you will have to maintain and fix the house itself long before the efficiency in the solar panels have dropped dead.

Over the past 5+ years, my Leaf battery has lost about 20% or 20 miles range on a full charge. Fortunately, I have a free charging station close to my office, if I need to run extra errands. I am probably good for another 5 years at this rate of decline, after which the question will be replace the battery or the car? In the meantime, I continue to save about $1700 per year in operating costs.

A roof panel installation is not difficult to remove and replace for a traditional roof repair. For my metal roof, which is guaranteed as effectively permanent up to winds of 155 mph, I am looking into gluing on flexible panels.

True Mac, I have replaced and fixed my fair share of roofs in life. A solar roof of course adds to the complexity, but I was mainly talking about the 30+ years of life span which really doesnt feel that different from non solar roofs, some last longer, some a bit less, either way the various solar roofs/panel solutions doesnt seem to change the lifespan that much, but yes, they do add to the complexity of fixing up the roof that is for sure.
