Tesla autopilot can avoid crashes before they happen

January 2, 2017 by Alan Stainer

Tesla autopilot can avoid crashes before they happen

This is a really impressive demonstration of the Tesla’s autopilot capabilities. More than just showing off some clever programming and use of scanners, it highlights something really important.

We are at a transition stage in automated vehicle technology. Currently there is a lot of anxiety about the safety of automated vehicles in comparison to human drivers. What this incident (because it really did happen) shows is that automated vehicles can actually identify problems and react in a safe manner much faster than a human ever could. If you watch the video you will see and hear the car detect a collision is about to happen before the driver is aware that anything is wrong. In fact, it would be impossible for the driver to know anything is wrong, because the car that causes the accident is not even visible at first.

That is amazing Alan Stainer. I’ve watched it umpteen times trying to pre-empt the system (although in real time that’s not possible). Alas to no avail. I’m still trying to figure out how it detected the crash by monitoring the cars behind (behind the crash that is) and how it figured out it wasn’t just a sudden slow down because of say, a traffic jam ahead, unforeseen by the drivers immediately in front?

Nicholas Berry something which doesn’t get mentioned a lot is the possibility of automated vehicles sharing data with nearby vehicles. More vehicles on the roads with sensors and the ability to share and predict outcomes = more experiences like the one in the video.

Not necessarily what happened in this case, but it would explain how the Tesla was able to see two cars ahead.

Yes that’s impressive. Just wondering though why other cars nearby that obviously were not on auto pilot managed also to not collide, including possibly cars behind the tesla?

Alan Stainer Yes, I half suspected that was (possibly) behind it. Otherwise how would it have ‘seen’ beyond the drivers vision, that far in advance?

Very impressive but… It would only need to get it wrong once and it could result in an even larger accident, I’m not sure I would want to be one of the first few to have it installed if I am honest.

Man Van in Tesla’s case the name autopilot is slightly misleading. At least at the moment it is, because they advise drivers to remain alert and in full control of their vehicle in case anything should happen that would cause an accident. It is still the driver’s responsibility to drive safely and they can override the autopilot at any time.

I think it read the break lights of the rear car involved in the accident, I saw the break lights before it responded and probably I would have acted before it. Anyway, technology is cool.

Alan Stainer I was thinking more that it would get it wrong and hit the brakes hard when there was no need to and when you were not ready for it causing those behind you to crash into the back.

Man Van as I said we are at a transition stage at the moment. You are working under the assumption that the technology might go wrong, because we (collectively) don’t have enough experience with automated vehicles to form a different opinion yet. It’s a bit like getting in the car with someone who has only just passed their driving test. It might scare you for a while at first, but eventually (assuming there are no mishaps) you will begin to trust their ability to drive safely.
