Windows 10’s market share has flatlined
I wish this article had some information about other operating systems so we can see a clear picture of the marketplace as a whole. Still though, it’s definitely interesting in reference to Windows. Also, Windows XP is still going strong!

– trying to force users to move was a bad idea.
– taking control away from users was a bad idea.
– not giving people a way to turn off all data collection about them was a bad idea.
– Taking features that were in home versions of Win 7/8 and making them only available in 10 Pro/Enterprise was a bad idea
– Expecting ANY sales after you forced everyone who even might convert to win 10 to switch on MS’s schedule was shot sighted.
– Creating nag screens that you can’t or are hard to make go away telling you to switch to Win 10 was a bad idea (seriously, I kept seeing information signs in malls, mcdonalds, and other places that were stuck on one of the several nag screens)
Basically they blew it at every step. Window’s has had bad versions before (98 first edition, Vista, W8, etc) but they have always recovered because they have never alienated so many people as they did with this upgrade cycle.

i haven’t had the need for windows in many years, pretty much hardcore Linux and BSD here. LMDE for laptops, Arch on the desktops and FreeBSD on the server etc.
I left windows back in XP SP1 days and never looked back. Missed 7 and 8.x pretty much completely. Bought a Windows tablet last year for next to nothing and decided to go against my better judgement and kept it in.. Was running 8.1 w/ Bing and got the 10 update for free… Now i have used 7 and 8, but only at work, and it was horrific.
Windows 10 is actually, and i am sucked to say this, actually quite pleasant to use, especially on the tablet. Work uses RHEL now, but i have found a soft spot for 10. It’s actually really useful on the tablet and is an epic disaster recovery tool for my androids when out and about (it’s actually saved my ass a few times).
On a side note, the florists i ended up liking, the little coffee shop in town and my favourite hairdressers all went out of business… Seems every thing i end up enjoying our growing a soft spot for, fails.
I would hate to see M$ disappear, mocking apple fannies alone will be no fun. Couple them with the window warriors, it’s epic and endless fun

I still maintain that UX/UI wise Windows10 is the best windows has been in a long time. Theres a lot of really nice stuff its doing – much long overdue, and much for “powerusers”. From simple things like file copying, to more specialized things like changing user paths a lot is like “shit why wasn’t this done sooner”. Hell, opening a command prompt or powershell on a folder is now just there in the menu.
Its just a shame Microsoft earnt so much bad-faith due to the crappy forced upgrades, privacy issues etc.

I certainly don’t hate Windows. I got my start in it back in the 90s after switching up from a junk DOS machine. By 2004 I was using Linux full time. I do have two copies of Windows 10 Pro because of the technical preview installs I did before it was officially released. But I rarely have to load up either one of them. When I do it’s because of certain games or apps that just simply won’t cooperate in Linux, not even in Wine.

Linux is okay, but one big flaw about it is that most popular programs (like Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Office) won’t run on Linux, unless you use Wine. But even with Wine, the performance on Linux would be unpleasant.

Andrew Pintado Well, you can do anything in anything more or less. My point was not whats possible, it was the UI makes it easier and quicker. Userpaths, for example, is a sensible vertical list of each one separated with “add” and “edit” buttons.
In XP, its a semi-colon separated list in one small box.(typically Id cut and paste the contents, edit in notepad, and paste back). Theres lots of simple improvements like that dotted about.
And yes, Linux is great, I am just pointing out a few ways windows has actually got better since XP/7.
