Wayne R Good question. The answer is probably related to the the fact that you cannot hold a gun manufacturer responsible for anything done with their product. Autonomous vehicles will be available only as long as Tesla and other manufacturers can shift most of the liability to the customer.
Mac Baird guns are not autonomous and there are strong laws against putting such a system in place so the comparison does not at all hold up,so I must insure possible property damage or personal injury caused by Tesla’s self driving car? What a racket they have going,We control it,you insure it,WHAT?
I still wont drive a car that people think is “smarter” then the human… I’ve avoided more accidents just by paying attention to the road and not to my phone or any other device in the vehicle.
Just a trendy hype, a way to take your money. The open roads need infrastructure renovation in order to support any kinds of autonomous cars or you need real AI (like human think or better than human, not just winning on chess by deep learning) but 2 years are definitely not enough.
As long as you are the deciding factor when to use the autonomous driving feature with regard to weather and road conditions, road debris, etc., you are responsible, especially in “No Fault” insurance States. The manufacturer is only responsible for what they are willing to warranty, nothing more, unless you can prove fraud. Perhaps Tesla will be willing to insure anyone who drives their cars.
Unfortunately, driving without insurance is illegal in virtually every State, and violators are subject to immediate arrest when discovered. In Florida, police always ask for license and registration on routine stops, but they always demand proof of insurance at accidents.
The Tesla CEO doesn’t even permit his sales people to offer discounts. Their market will continue to be just the wealthiest 1%. However, the MSRP of my 2012 Nissan Leaf EV has dropped by $5,000 for the current year model due to competition with other manufacturers.
Indeed, if there is no more accident, we don’t need air bags, seat belt, or crumple zone. Furthermore, the car design can have a new form factor, and since there is no need for human to drive or even pay attention to the road, there is no need of windows or wheel. All the insurance claims and even the insurance should go to car manufactures since they claim their car is level 5, they have all the data and statistics, and it’s their AI (or their remote controller also an AI who knows) that drives the cars. However, the government won’t let this happen. Level 5 should involve the government and the society, not a single man’s stunt. Too many of us are given a nicely staged picture (and a video) and a short timeline, and forget why the commercial world needs to push this.
Dominic Green the point is why do you need a driver’s license or insurance for a car that drives itself the person who owns the car that’s autonomous driving needs to ensure in case the computer program Has a Glitch that’s a bunch of BS
It is highly unlikely that we will ever see a car that is 100% autonomous 100% of the time and 100% reliable under all conditions and variables. When there is an accident with damage to person or property, whatever the cause, there is liability. Regarding licensing, States are not going to give up that source of revenue willingly.
Having the hardware does not mean it is fully autonomous. This is just to make the vehicle forward compatible. The software has yet to catch up to the hardware, but while it is easy to upgrade the software the hardware is considerably more difficult, so it makes sense to put in the most advanced hardware now so that while the software may not fully utilize it now it can in the future.
Dominic Green Your choice. If you don’t like the technology you are free to drive whichever vehicle you choose, or not to drive at all. I am not a fan of Dodge or Nissan vehicles, but yet they are on the road. People have individual preferences and in a free world they are allowed to have those preferences.

If the car drives itself why would you need a driver’s license or insurance
