BYOD or should that be BYOP?

BYOD or should that be BYOP?

Have you heard of Portable Apps? I hadn’t until a reader pointed them out to me. Here’s my piece in the local paper about them.

I remember portableapps from years ago, and they’re still alive? Wow, impressive :)

Alan Stainer portableapps used to work well. I was able to use it to run the portable version of Firefox from my USB stick rather than the IE that they tried to inflict on me.

I would suspect that IT administrators have now figured out ways to block programs from running on any given machine on a network. It would be a relatively trivial task to create a program that downloaded data to the USB.

Ian Dixon also there is the additional security risk that a USB stick could get stolen. I know you can buy USB sticks with locks (portableapps.com even sell one), but you would still lose data if lost or stolen.

Alan Stainer any portable device is at risk of being lost or stolen. The UK military do seem to be quite good at losing laptops that store unencrypted but classified data.

It really comes down to the importance of backups. Any fresh data on a memory stick should be copied to a different machine as soon as possible. Same applies to any other portable devices being used.
