I used to Dual boot Windows and Linux but after years of being a Windows user Microsoft have finally driven me away with their shenanigans and I never thought I would ever say these words but I bought a Mac.

Ah but imagine if you had to install from floppy Alan Stainer

Many happy hours as one after another is stuffed into the drive..

Then the last [expletive deleted] won’t read so the whole update has failed and that has happened to me in the past.

So the update is, I left the PC upgrade going all day and it has finally finished. Now it is going through the oh so slow process of setting up the profiles again.

Such a waste of time and bandwidth!

The whole model for windows 10 has changed. It now updates like Google chrome does, giving you the latest version every so often. I’m in their fast ring and get a new build every month, standard users get a build maybe once or twice a year, depending on what Microsoft want to send out.

I think you’ll be getting this happen once a year. It shouldn’t be taking all day though, slowest I get is about 60 mins outage. I did however have a laptop which got stuck half way through and sat there for hours in the same % .. Ended up having to fall back and reapply. So In that sense it was a very long outage.

If you run winver (type it into the “ask me anything” box) you’ll see the version 1511 and build (mine is 14251.1000). You can look up the changes online. Many of the updates though are actually combining code bases between windows phones and windows OS, so you’ll not really see a huge amount of beneficial changes (my view at least).

Hopefully you’ll not get this too frequently. You’ll still get traditional updates as usual

It’s a model Google have been using for some time with their Chromebooks, except the only difference is, it takes about 20 seconds to update the whole OS on chromebooks, but then .. it’s just a browser, linux kernal and a few bits to glue it all together.

The maddening thing is, I only upgraded the PC to Windows 10 within the past week. I checked the updates at the time and it said there were no more to do, which made sense as I told it to download the latest updates during the upgrade…

Alan Stainer  probably down to the way it is rolled out due to its size Microsoft not wanting all users receiving it at the same time, just bad/unfortunate timing. I got mine in November, but can understand your shock today

Prashanth Manavi If you mean the battery dies while updating, i think it is always recommended to have a power supply connected during any update/upgrade

Not been my experience Prashanth Manavi, however it could depends on your setup and if you have some poorly supported drivers over using the processors in windows 10. I use process explorer to view what is hammering your CPU (windows 10 actually comes with some great tools in the task manger that do the same job). But I would suspect it’s software or drivers and not windows 10 that is to blame.
