Microsoft drops unlimited OneDrive storage

November 4, 2015 by Alan Stainer

Microsoft drops unlimited OneDrive storage

Could it possibly be that Microsoft realised they could make more money from Office 365 and OneDrive by revoking the ‘unlimited’ offer?

Also they are dropping the free 15GB down to 5GBs, which puts it lower than the average used by OneDrive users.

It certainly makes the competition look more attractive. Both Google Drive and Copy are my go to cloud storage services and they give you more space for free from the word go.

I ditched OneDrive after Microsoft decided to integrate it with Windows 10 in such a forceful manner. Moved to a paid subscription to Google Drive instead supplemented by my free Dropbox where needed.

I understand getting rid of the unlimited… Sort of… But why would they put off the potential customers using the free service for something so trivial as 10 GB? Are they in financial trouble or something? lol it just doesn’t make sense.

Tom Woodland assuming he does not get extradited…Very interested in the outcome. Based on the way the previous service was taken down I hope the new block chain technology of Mega is a little more robust. 50Gb of free storage with Google type Apps very interesting.

Most of the reference material for my hobby is in electronic format nowadays. I only have a small “collection”, but it amounts to just under 50GB by itself never mind the other stuff I backup (software, photos, documents, etc.)

None of it is related to my work ;)

When you take a lot of photos and/or videos with a smartphone, it racks up pretty quick. Also I can see space being eaten up if you regularly have to create presentations or any type of document with more than just text inside.

***** “What the hell do people need 100GB storage for?”

You’re missing the point. It’s nothing less than cheating customers when you promise them “unlimited cloud storage space” (yes, UNLIMITED as in “without any limits”) and then turn around, stick two fingers in the air at the customers and say “Fooled you!”

You don’t trust Google? Well, neither do I, but I trust MS even less because they even bluntly lie in your face.
