Will Ubuntu 14 auto update?
If you have 14.04 LTS it may be set to only notify you of new LTS versions. The setting for that is in System Settings > Software & Updates > Updates. You can basically tell it to notify you of any new releases.

I am looking forward to the Unity 8 preview myself.
I am glad I upgraded my test PC first. It is now hanging while loading Ubuntu. Doh!
