When it comes writing words, Word isn’t the only kid on the block.
This is a decent list of alternative apps that don’t cost a penny. I would add Quip to the list as well, and Kingsoft Office if you are using Windows or Android.

Excellent list Alan Stainer though one fault.
I’ve used 4 out of the 5 in the past with LibreOffice being the one that I currently use. Scribus is the one that I have never tried though one to bear in mind for the future.
My fault with the list is that there is no mention of openoffice even to say that LibreOffice is a fork from it.
